Just In: Supreme Court Upholds Sanwo-Olu’s Victory as Lagos Governor

The Supreme Court has affirmed the victory of Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the Governor of Lagos State in the 2023 gubernatorial polls. The appeal filed by the Labour Party (LP) candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour to upturn the election result was dismissed by Justice Garba Lawal.

After the gubernatorial election in February 2023, Rhodes-Vivour and Abdulazeez Adediran of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, filed a case at the Supreme Court, contending the result of the election. According to them, Sanwo-Olu failed to meet every requirement needed to be elected as governor. They also stated that the Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat was not qualified to contest.

However, the lawyers representing Babajide Sanwo-Olu told the Court that the claims brought against Sanwo-Olu and his Deputy were not true. Nas Ogunsakin, who represented the PDP in Court, said the petition was filed without evidence to back up their claims. He also said that the witnesses brought to the Court room were incompetent.

The Supreme Court has however, given a verdict in favour of the sitting Governor.
